Little Nemo: Adventures in Slumberland is an award-winning Japanese animated film directed by Masami Hata and William T. Hurtz. Loosely based on the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay, the screenplay was written by nearly 20 people, although in the final film, Chris Columbus and Richard Outten are given nearly sole credit. (The storyline and art style differed from the original). Original songs were penned by the Academy Award-winning Sherman Brothers.

The film was released in Japan in July of 1989, and in the United States on August 21, 1992. It won the \"Audience Award\" at the \"Cinekid Festival 1992\" in Amsterdam, and was nominated for \"Best Animated Feature\" at the 1993 Annie Awards. While it was considered a box-office flop in the U.S., it became a cult classic and a hit on video, selling over 2 million copies upon its release in 1993. A DVD version became available in October of 2004. In Japan, the film is known simply as Little Nemo.
