At the earliest stages of training, students are introduced to the relative time values of notes; they are taught how long each note lasts. 'A half note gets this many beats, and a dotted eighth note gets that many beats' and so on. Because it's almost impossible to play correctly a series of notes whose time values involve complex fractions (a third of a beat, a quarter of a beat, etc).
